Across the English Channel to France

Our final night in London was such great fun.  We met at the Chancery Court bar for cocktails before heading out to Ship’s Tavern pub for a traditional British dinner.  London pubs are happening, hopping, hip places!  Ship’s Tavern was buzzing with activity… but we were shown to the dining room, up a flight of stairs.  How clubby!!! How pubby!  Warm, dark woods, beautiful old furniture and furnishings… even our own private bar and bartender.  The menu did not disappoint. Did you ask??? Of course I had fish & chips, with malt vinegar and smashed peas!  The fish was haddock and it was of substantial size!  Some of the group had English pies (like a pot pie) and some had the special of the evening, ribs… & oh what a plate of ribs!  Once our dinner was completed, we headed off to the West End to see Jersey Boys.  The West End is about a fifteen to twenty minute walk from the restaurant.  Our seats were among the best in the theatre; we were up close and personal so that we could see every expression.  I know that  Steve and Ken thought they had their own personal stereos, as I was singing all those favorite songs!  Big Girls Don’t Cry, Sherry, and of course the list goes on and on.  The stage door beckoned us after the grand finale so that’s we headed so that we could meet the cast and hopefully get photos with them!  & did we… Yes, we did.  Joe Pesci, sneaked away from us though… trying to hide behind a box that he was carrying.  He didn’t know what he missed!  On our way back to the hotel, we stopped in at Shakespeare’s Head to hobnob with the locals.

After a good night’s sleep we were up early to grab breakfast and meet our transport to the pier in Southampton.  All I can say is the traffic around London is absolutely unbelievable! As I learned, the M25, is the largest parking lot in the world!  Once we finally reached the Mayflower Cruise terminal in Southampton, embarkation was a breeze.  We were onboard and in our room in Riviera Deck shortly.  Hunger set in, so off the Horizon Court for grub.  It was a late lunch and then we had to unpack our bags so we opted for a late dinner at the lobster buffet.  Yes, on the first night of the cruise, Princess generally has a seafood buffet that includes lobster (all you can eat).

The Captain informed us that the seas would likely be quite rough for the crossing of the English Channel so we took our bonine before going to bed.  Our wake-up call was 6:15 am and following breakfast, we caught our tour for Honfleur.  We have been to the Normandy Beaches and Paris is something that deserves much more than a partial day!    So our choice was the quaint and beautiful fishing village of Honfleuer.  Honfleur has been the subject of many painters, including Claude Monet.  I snapped a few photographs that I hope will do it justice.  Among other things, I learned that cows of Normandy wear sunglasses – they are white & brown/black with dark rings around their eyes.  Of course, the Normandy region of France is well known for its soft cheeses (camembert for one) and apple brandy!  Apple orchards abound here so there is lots of cider and brandy… most with some sort of alcoholic content.  On our last trip to this region, I had purchased some Calvados, Normandy’s apple brandy, but it’s long gone now; so that was on my shopping list.  Voila!  I found it so will be inspired to make a French dish with calvados upon our return home!

Well, as I am blogging, guess what Ken is doing?  If you know him, you may suggest that he is doing laundry!  How did  you know?  He’s in the 14th deck laundry room at this very moment, reading the London Times and watching over our laundry. I’m so lucky that he likes to do laundry!

A Day in London

Hello mates!  London is busy.. I've seen quite eclectic people here thus far.. But alas no Wills and/or Kate.  Where are they?  Every cattail cruiser couple arrived safely.  After meeting our driver at the airport, Ken & I arrived at Chancery Court Hotel at 7 am.  Too early to check in, we set out to explore London.  We walked and walked and ended up at an Italian restaurant, frankies for lunch!  After lunch, we made our way back to the hotel and checked in.  It was time to catch a few zzz's before meeting our friends for dinner.  At 6:30 pm, we met in the hotel lobby and headed off to london's china town.  For some reason, our favorite dim sum restaurant, the new world, was closed... So the group voted and we were seated at the crispy duck restaurant!  It seemed to be a tiny place, but upon entering, we were escorted up 2 flights of stairs to the 3rd floor dining room.  Following dinner, it was time for some fun photos...all of us in one of the iconic red phone booths, under the china town gate, outside of popular pubs, and such.  And...then it was time for our first full night of sleep!
After breakfast at a French cafe, ken and I headed for a Boots pharmacy to purchase shampoo, toiletries, etc that would have weighted down our luggage!  Then it was off to Oxford and Bond streets...we did not do any tours or such since we have been here many times... But some of the group were planning to do so.
This evening we are all meeting in the hotel bar, followed by dinner at Ship's Tavern for British fare.  This will be topped of by seeing Jersey Boys in the West End... To be followed by who knows what!
Our Princess transport will take us to the ship at noon tomorrow, Saturday...where we will begin our 12 night British isles cruise.
The weather has been perfect thus far..no rain and 70 degree temps!
A few of my reflections thus far:
1) shoes worn by women are flats or boots...some are brightly colored, even decorated with feathers.  Attire is skinny jeans and tights...for non-Muslim women.. London is very internationally eclectic with many Muslims, Indians, and so forth so you see all sorts of attire!
2) Londoners spend money and shop!  Shops, streets, pubs and restaurants are mobbed. I can't keep up with them.
3) I wonder why we use our right hand for eating and they just spear the food with their left?
4) neighborhood pubs are alive and doing well.
5) the Tube system is clean and efficient... Even I can navigate it without getting lost!!!
More reflections to come later...
Ok, that's it for now.. Stay tuned..

Packed With Room to Spare

I am dancing and singing because I am packed with plenty of room to spare! How many pairs of shoes made it into my bag? Six!!! And I still have room for a new pair that I may purchase in London! I will check-in online and print our boarding passes this evening and we will be good to go tomorrow.

I am packing!

Yes, I said packing... but not quite packed yet! The airline limits us to one checked bag each, which must be a maximum of 50 pounds. So, that's what I'm up against at the moment... If you know me, you know that I love shoes... and shoes can add mucho weight to my luggage. Oh, what to do?! Well, let's narrow it down: we will be traveling to the British Isles and the high temps are ranging from 60-73 during the daytime and in the 50's at night. Of course, it can be windy & rainy too. So, perhaps one pair of sandals for luck, one pair of ankle boots for cold, wet weather... one pair of dressier shoes for evenings onboard the ship, one pair of sneakers for working out & walking, and one pair of ballet type flats that make me a "real European woman"! Next on my agenda is to add these shoes and see if my bag is over 50 pounds... next update coming later ya'll!

Cruise Critic Roll Call for our cruise

Cruise Critic has always been one of my favorite resources for cruises that we are taking or considering! Ken & I have met many friends through interaction on this site; some have become life long friends! We have quite an active group for the July 16 Crown Princess British Isles cruise; see our roll call! You will see from my blog that I have learned quite a bit from fellow cruise critic members, as some of their thoughts are incorporated. I am looking forward to meeting our fellow cruisers!

Southampton, UK July 28

Our cruise ends in Southampton and we will have an early morning disembarkation from Crown Princess. Our flight back to the US will depart on July 29th as we were unable to get a flight using our frequent flyer miles on July 28th! No problem! There are six of the group who will have a day to explore the maritime city of Southampton!

After researching lodging options, I decided to try The White Star. It gets rave reviews on Tripadvisor and is a local boutique style inn and not a big chain hotel! The tavern/pub is reported to be one of the best dining options in Southampton... so I have made a 7:30 pm dinner reservation for the group. The White Star Tavern and Dining Rooms (28 Oxford Street, 02380 821 990) started life as a seafarers' hotel. The interior pays homage to the history of the building, with chandeliers and comfy leather sofas. The cuisine is "modern British" with familiar names such as local sausages and mash, beer battered fish and chips and some healthier options, such as pan fried fillet of salmon or breast of free range chicken.

Southampton sells itself as the shopping capital of the South Coast and the West Quay shopping centre does nothing to dispel you of that opinion. Walk along Above Bar Street toward the waterfront and the West Quay Mall will be on your right. John Lewis and Marks And Spencer are the major draws, but there are 97 other shops happy to separate you from your hard-earned dollars. The Bargate Centre and Mall Marlands will also help in your efforts to get in ship shape after our cruise. Above Bar and its continuation, High Street, have a number of pubs, cafes and restaurants to rest your feet and have a meal or drink ... or both. The 15th century Red Lion pub is one (but see my note below!)

There are two main areas for eating out in Southampton; the first is Southampton's hipster district Oxford Street (towards Ocean Village) and the second is around Bedford Place (just North of the city). Oxford Street has a selection of higher class restaurants. Recommended are the White Star (English/Traditional), Olive Tree, Oxford Brasserie for bistro fare, and Kutis (Indian) among others.

For a Pint: The Red Lion on High Street dates back to Tudor times and is a must-see. Kan always like to have a "mission" whenever we travel... so I propose this as his Southampton mission: see if the Red Lion still exists! I can't find a website except for a couple of Youtube videos and websites that have to do with ghosts in the Red Lion! For those looking for something more lively, The Platform Tavern nearby on the waterfront is an excellent bet as it features live jazz and blues music and a superb selection of local real ales. The city center also has the usual spattering of chain pubs, including Slug & Lettuce, two Wetherspoon's (the one on High Street is The Standing Order, Walkabout, Bar Risa and Que Pasa.

Central Chauffer will collect the six of us & our luggage at 5:15 am on July 29th to take us to London's Heathrow Airport and our trip back to the gold ole USA!

Cattail Cruisers Pre-Theatre Dinner in London, July 15

As some of the group are spending a few days in London before the cruise, I thought it would be fun to get West End theatre tickets & of course enjoy a pre-theatre dinner in Covent Garden! Reservations have been made for Porters English Restaurant. I did this online for our group of eight; Porters get good reviews on Tripadvisor.com! Some of us are going to see Jersey Boys at the Prince Edward Theatre in the West End. I know, Jersey Boys in London??? What was I thinking? Well here's the deal... I wanted to see something upbeat, happy, and sing-along to begin our trip. So that's why Jersey Boys rather than War Horse!

More Travel Tips from Pat

 Make two copies of your passports and credit cards (just in the unlikely event that they get misplaced or stolen). Leave one copy in the safe in your stateroom and another copy with family or friends at home.
 Remember that pickpockets are common throughout Europe and especially in tourist areas. Do not keep a wallet in your back pocket, but purchase a secure money holder (WalMart has them).
 Internet service is available on the ship, but it is expensive. Although we purchase a package of minutes, we generally use internet cafes which are easy to find in every port – and are inexpensive. Just for our travels, we have a yahoo email account for the simple reason that it stores our address book and is easy access.
 Cell phone: if you plan to use one check with your provider re: international calls. We purchased an international cell phone online from Mobal, at www.mobal.com. When we purchased our phone a year ago, the cost of the phone was $99 and there are no further fees or charges unless you make or receive calls. I see from Mobal's website that you can get a phone for as little as $29. Note that this phone will not work within the U.S. and calling rates are very reasonable.
 You can call home directly from your stateroom on the ship, but the cost is around $10 per minute.
 Clothing: Comfortable shoes are a MUST. Depending upon your tours, you could walk a lot and there are lots of cobblestone streets. In the Cathedrals, knees & shoulders should be covered. Open-toe shoes and sandals are fine. I usually pack a shawl in my backpack.
 If you are worried about motion sickness: over-the-counter Bonine is what we use and it does not make you drowsy.
 Cruisecritic.com: One of my favorite websites! Check out this website for a wealth of information from cruisers like ourselves, cruisecritic.com.
 Baggage Allowance: Check with your airline as to baggage allowances; most airlines allow each passenger to check one bag of up to 50 pounds and one carry-on.

Thoughts on London

If you are planning to stay in London for a day or more (pre or post-cruise),I recommend that you take a city tour to get a good overview and to visit some of the major attractions: Tower of London, Thames River cruise, Buckingham Palace, Royal Albert Hall, etc. As food is pricy in London, we have had fun eating at spaghetti houses, pubs & Chinese restaurants. There is a wonderful chain called “The Spaghetti House” and London’s China Town is near the West End. And of course there is nothing quite like British “fish & chips” and beer! Shopping at Harrod’s is fun but expensive; we usually hit the fabulous & famous Food Court there & purchase some English biscuits or such. Selfridge’s, however, is where I usually shop; it’s a wonderful British department store! The West End (London’s Theatre District) and Covent Garden (you will remember from “My Fair Lady” that Eliza sold flowers there) are really fun areas & are quite close together. If you are interested, there are online sources to purchase theatre tickets; let me know if you want information.
Taxis are expensive (but oh so cute!) so we usually take the Tube (London’s subway system) and get inexpensive day or “oyster” passes. It’s safe, quick, and clean.

Glasgow (Greenock), Scotland July 23

Crown Princess docks in Greenock, Scotland which is about 25-30 miles from Glasgow. The town of Greenock is about a 10 minute walk from the pier. I have learned that we will most likely be greeted on arrival by bagpipers and that the good-bye send-off is memorable. The Inverclyde Tourist Group runs free bus tours of the local Greenock area (not tours to Glasgow), for which you can collect tickets on the dock. These tours are offered by local volunteers who have a passion for their local area. The tours are free, but they do ask for a donation to cover fuel costs. You must however be quick, as they are usually full to capacity by mid day. After exploring Greenock, stop at the James Watt Wetherspoon Pub for some fine ales!

Planning to go into Glasgow for the day? While Glasgow does not have the historical past of Edinburgh, there is plenty to see & do. It's a more commercial and industrial city. There is a HOHO bus which leaves from George Square and takes you to most of the city highlights. In George Square itself, you will find the City Chambers, which Tripadvisor.com readers rank as the #1 attraction in Glasgow. If museums and art top your list, about 100 yards from George Sq., in Queen St, is the Museum of Modern Art. Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery is world class. There is so much to see in the museum and the Art Gallery boasts many originals from Picasso, Dali, Monet, Degas, Rembrandt etc. The Peoples Palace at Glasgow Green (city centre park) focuses on Glasgow history. Entrance to all museums in Glasgow is free.

Glasgow Cathedral is a magnificent Gothic building, parts of which date back to the 1200s. Beside this there the Religious Museum and Provands Lordship which is the oldest house in Glasgow (1471).

For shoppers,Buchanan Street the most popular area. The city centre is fairly compact and safe.

Edinburgh, Scotland... July 19

Crown Princess will anchor in S. Queensferry for our visit to Edinburgh (locally pronounced Edinbra). Click here for a map of Edinburgh. One of the highlights is, of course, Edinburgh Castle, a fortress which dominates the skyline. Edinburgh Castle is Scotland's most visited tourist attraction. Some of the Castle attractions include the Great Hall, the National War Museum, the one o'clock gun and the spectacular views: you can see the entire city stretched in all directions from different ends of the castle. Here's a map of the castle. The price for admission to the castle is £14 for adults and you can purchase tickets in advance online.

A walk along the Royal Mile, one of the most famous streets in the world is also a "must do" in Edinburgh. The Royal Mile has Edinburgh Castle located at the top and Holyrood Palace (Scotland's official residence of the Queen) at the foot and is roughly 1.5 miles long. The best way to see the Royal Mile is on foot, but a city bus tour will also give one the feel of it. This is the place to buy your souvenirs... kilts anyone?

Plan to stop at a pub or cafe for a refreshment! Into local cuisine? Then you must try haggis, one of the traditional Scottish dishes. Haggis is a kind of sausage, or savoury pudding cooked in a casing of sheep's intestine, as many sausages are. The haggis is a traditional Scottish dish memorialised as the national dish of Scotland by Robert Burns' poem "Address to a Haggis" in 1787. Haggis is traditionally served with "neeps and tatties" (Scots: swede, yellow turnip or rutabaga and potatoes, boiled and mashed separately) and a "dram" (i.e. a glass of Scotch whiskey. Sound yummy?

After experiencing some history and a tasty Scottish lunch, how about a Scottish whiskey tour? Visit the new Scotch Whisky Experience for a sensational journey! Take a swirling, bubbling barrel ride through a replica distillery as you become part of the whisky making process. Along the way you’ll hear the stories behind this magical craft, with expert tour guides and whisky advisors with you every sip of the way.

Princess offers a variety of excursions for Edinburgh. As Ken & I love to do things "on our own" when we can, we are planning to book the Princess "on your own" tour which will provide transportation to/from Edinburgh. I haven't had much luck in discovering if the city of Edinburgh provides shuttles from the pier at Queensferry that may be less expensive than a Princess tour. So, to be safe, the Princess on your own is on my agenda!

Final day on Oasis of the Seas… back to the real world tomorrow!

Oh what a time!  Late December back in ‘63, what a special night (time!)..Just remembering a song… I digress… This has been quite a time onboard one of the largest cruise ships in the world!  Following a spectacular Cinco de Mayo in beautiful Cozumel, dinner at Chop’s Grille was the icing on the cake!    I really can’t decide which I like better, Giovanni’s Table or Chop’s Grille!  Meeting the cast of Hair Spray following their small, personal performance of Broadway tunes, was a nice touch.

This morning’s seminar was the final one for this sailing.  Peggy and Monika did a fantastic job; our group of agents rocked the Oasis… oh yes, the seminar was topped off by a complimentary visit to the Cupcake Cupboard, compliments of our BDMs, Peggy and Monika! Delish!  Today’s session was on social networking, among other agenda items.  For those of you who know me, you know that I LOVE socializing, networking, facebooking, and I’ll soon be tweeting!  Presentations were made by the groups manager, spa manager, sports & fitness manager, assistant cruise director, and more.  Needless to say, I have gained a lot of knowledge & am loving being a part of the travel industry!

After a fun & informative morning of seminar, lunch at Giavanni’s Table awaited… divine once again!  I will say, though, that we enjoyed a lighter lunch.  Pool time next!!! Beautifully sunny day with lots of poolside activities and music so I found the perfect perch.  Reading my kindle ( a novel written by a local from wilmington, NC about british royalty… in preparation for my next trip.. to the british isles!)  I also wandered round the ship to take more photos… smile everyone!

We have dinner tonight with the group… time to say our good-byes for the moment.  I’ve met some colleagues with  whom I will stay in touch and have thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful experience.

Our flight departs tomorrow at 1:05 pm so we shall be back home tomorrow evening in time to order Papa John’s Pizza… YES, I hear that Southport finally has a Papa John’s! Zoey, little furry friend, here we come!

Jamaica – No Problem Mon! Don’t Worry Be Happy!

We awoke to an overcast sky & scattered showers that gave way to a brilliantly sunny and warm day.  Oasis docked at the new port of Falmouth, the newest port of call in the Caribbean! A partnership between Royal Caribbean Cruises and the Port Authority of Jamaica has set in motion the development of an innovative cruise port facility.

Since Ken & I have visited Jamaica many times, both on cruises, and in resorts such as Sandals, we decided against an organized excursion and just wandered around the town square on our own and enjoyed the ship, as it was a bit less crowded than on sea days!

Let me back up a bit to our last evening, Monday… I had made advance reservations for the aqua theatre, Oasis of Dreams followed by dinner at Giavanni’s table for fine Italian cuisine in a romantic atmosphere.  As it turned out, we could see Oasis of Dreams better from our balcony than from the theatre seats!!!  So we enjoyed it in private confort.  The performers are worldwide athletes… divers, gymnasts, swimmers and their credentials are overwhelming.  Because we have been watching their practice sessions from our balcony, we feel that we almost know them.  It’s a great show and I encourage everyone who cruises on Oasis to see this special performance!

Giavanni’s Table… was crazy busy when we arrived for our 9:00 pm reservation.  Because our room had been upgraded, they couldn’t find our reservation so we headed back to our stateroom to get the confirmation, which I had thankfully printed!  Oh yes, there we are… sorry… we were seated at a table for two by the window.  Our vino arrived, antipasto, bread, salad, and entrees… Ken with sea bass and me with osso bucco.  The dessert menu was delectable, but after all that, chocolate gelato was my final choice! It’s all here on Oasis!

Now it’s time for another lovely evening in this city of 6000!  What did I choose for a romantic dining venue?  Why it’s Chop’s Grille of course!  Ruth’s Chris comes to mind…mouthwatering cuisine in an elegant setting!  Headliners show to follow – I think it’s a comedy show with a duo… Oh no… I’d better hide in the back row as for some reason, they usually choose me to come on stage and be their stooge!!!

Oops.. Ken is telling me that it’s time to get ready for dinner…… so until tomorrow, I shall sign off. But stay tuned!

My Seminar At Sea on Oasis of the Seas: Day 3 update

Embarkation was a breeze at the new Terminal 18 at Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale.  We grabbed a taxi from our hotel, The Renaissance, and were onboard by 11:30 Saturday morning.  There was a bit of the snafu when we checked in for the cruise as they had a credit of 1 penny on our account that had something to do with a service dog charge!  Had I known, Zoey would have certainly been packed in my carry-on bag!  We enjoyed our Bon Voyage lunch at Giavanni’s Table, one of the specialty restaurants onboard Oasis.  It’s a beautiful venue with delightful cuisine and wonderful service.  It’s a complete Tuscan experience, at sea! Giavanni’s is located in the Central Park neighborhood.

Central Park is the single most innovative feature of the design of Oasis.    This is truly the world’s first at-sea park.  It took a whole lot of dirt to complete this park – 82 metric tons of dirt to be exact! Daily guided tours of the park are led by onboard expert horticulturalists.  The greenery is lush along the paths & walkways.  Two living walls that measure 25 feet across and 5 decks high create an amazing focal point with flowering vines such as Clerondendrom ‘bleeding heart”, Thunbergia ‘stormy sky’, and althernthera ‘purple night’.

As you can see, I am learning quite a lot about this ship and product through the seminar, led by two of Royal Caribbean’s best managers!  We are a group of 30 agents & our guests, so we number about 60!

Our hosts and leaders, Peggy and Monica, hosted a welcome cocktail reception and group dinner the first evening.  The following day was seminar for me while Ken explored the ship on his own.  The seminar was fun as we were grouped into teams and were assigned a shipwide scavenger hunt with group presentations to follow.  My group worked well together and I have made some valuable friendships already!

We enjoyed dinner in the Opus Dining Room and our evening was topped off by experiencing the Broadway show, Hairspray.  The production was excellent!  I can’t imagine that it would have been better on Broadway!

Today we are in Labadee, one of Royal Caribbean’s private islands, located in Haiti.  I was here about 5 years ago and all I can say is WOW – it is even better than it was then!  & it was pretty perfect then!  The Dragon’s Tail zipline  drew me…. and the roller coaster too!  The location is so gorgeous… beautiful turquoise water, white sand beach, and lush foliage on this mountainous island.  Every type of water activity one could possibly want is offered here.  Several locations for beach barbecues, lots of chaises, personal watercraft, kayaks, parasailing, scuba, snorkel, of course plenty of pocoloco (the famous labadee island drink).

We are back onboard now and I have been watching the high divers practice for tonight’s Oasis of Dreams aquatic show.  They are diving from 17 meters from the surface of the water.  Ken & I have tickets to this evening’s show so I will write more about it tomorrow.  Oh yes, we also have reservations for dinner at Giavanni’s Table.  You all know that I just love Italian cuisine, right?

Love and Kisses for now!

Oasis of the Seas Here I Come!

Good morning from the Renaissance Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale.  The Oasis of the Seas arrived in Port Everglades this morning and she towers over everything!  First thing this morning, I made sure that she awaits us, as we will board in a couple of  hours!

After checking in, we met some fellow cruisers at the hotel bar and compared notes and made plans to meet onboard.  Afterwards, Ken & I walked over to the Quay where we had dinner at one of our favorite Ft. Lauderdale restaurants, Bravo.  What a way to kick off our Oasis experience.  We found a fun place for breakfast this Einstein’s.  The lines of locals waiting for breakfast inspired our confidence and we were not disappointed… my iced coffee was particularly good!

Now it’s time to gather our bags and catch the hotel shuttle to the pier.  We will be in room 11721, a boardwalk balcony stateroom.  This will be a first for me!  I’ll be sure to capture every nuance!

My Seminar at Sea on RCCL's Oasis of the Seas

The British Isles cruise is foremost on my mind, but to maintain my credentials, continuing education is essential. I am packing now for a Royal Caribbean seminar at sea on the "WOW", giant ship, Oasis of the Seas. While I am attending the seminar, mostly on sea days, hubby will get to enjoy this wonderful ship 24/7! He keeps telling me, "Don't worry about me... I'll be fine"! LOL! On this ship, you can book the evening shows online in advance, as well as specialty restaurants. I have made reservations for the adult comedy show, Hairspray, the water show with divers sort of a le cirque experience, and a headliner show... Oh yes, Chop's Grill and Giavanni's Table too. Almost packed.. Ken just weighed my luggage & I am AOK per the airline's 50 pound weight limit! Y'all stay tuned... when I get back, back to the British Isles state of mind. In the meantime, enjoy my blogs from Oasis.

Something Fun: Taste for Travel sponsored by Travelsmith

Here's a fun travel trivia website... and you can win prizes!
It's A Taste for Travel. Check it out!

Our first stop: Le Havre, France (for Paris and Normandy D-Day Beaches)

Crown Princess will dock in Le Havre on July 17th to allow us a full day for a trip to Paris or for exploring the Normandy Landing Beaches. Le Havre, "the harbour", is the second largest port in France after Marseille.

Click here for a map of the Normandy Region. This is our first port of call, after crossing the English Channel from Southampton.

Normandy is a geographical region corresponding to the former Duchy of Normandy. It is situated along the English Channel coast of Northern France between Brittany (to the west) and Picardy (to the east) and comprises territory in northern France and the Channel Islands.

The Normandy region of France is known for its cream, butter, cheeses, apples, and apple brandy (Calvados). Here's a wonderful regional recipe for poulet à la normande. One of the ingredients is Calvados, the French apple brandy that is distilled in Normandy. My pantry contains a couple of small bottles of Calvados that I purchased on a previous visit to Normandy. I don't know if I will be able to bring any back this time due to strict airline rules limiting liquids... but perhaps I can purchase some & have it shipped! Cheese lovers will be in heaven here as you may get to sample some of the local "dream cheeses". Normandy’s cheese board is one of the most impressive in France. It's most famous cheese, Camembert, comes from the village of the same name near Vimoutiers; but you can also try Neufchâtel, produced in a variety of different shapes and sizes, Pont-L’Evêque and Livarot.

During the Second World War, the D Day landings on the Normandy beaches under the code name Operation Overlord, started the lengthy Battle of Normandy which resulted in the Liberation of Paris, the restoration of the French Republic, and was a significant turning point in the war.

One humbling experience is to visit Omaha Beach, one of the five Landing beaches. Ken & I toured this area a number of yeas ago, but plan to do so again. My Daddy was in World War II as a 21 year old officer. He was not part of the D-Day invasion, but was in the Normandy region for a while in 1945. The future of France and Europe was at stake here on 6th June 1944. When you visit this beach which extends over Vierville-sur-Mer, Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer and Colleville-sur-Mer, you will obtain a clearer idea of the progress of the battles. The Bessin coastline is composed of steep chalk cliffs, which rise one hundred feet or so above the sea. Inaugurated in 1956, the American cemetery at Colleville was laid out in an area of 70 hectares (170 acres) which was ceded to the United States by the French government. The cemetery contains 9,387 gravestones perfectly aligned on a majestic expanse of green lawn. Every day at 4:30 pm, visitors can watch the ceremony of the Lowering of the Colours. To the sound of a military hymn, the American flag is lowered and folded. The American ceremony is the biggest, the most well known and the most moving of the Normandy Landing cemeteries.

Le Havre is generally billed as the cruise line port for Paris. Just be aware that Paris is a 2 1/2 hour commute away from Le Havre, so just be prepared if you plan to visit the City of Lights. Princess offers many excursions to Paris ranging from "Paris on Your Own" (roundtrip motorcoach transportation) to a variety of escorted tours. While a stop in Paris on a cruise vacation may not give you enough time to see all the sights, it’s a great chance to get a taste of what the city has to offer...and to ensure your return! You can shop along the Champs Élysée, visit picturesque, iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, or spend a day taking in one of the most extensive art collections in the world at the Louvre.... and oh yes, be sure to have a crepe or a croissant with le buerre of course!

A Few Days in London Pre-Cruise

We are flying into London's Heathrow Airport a couple of days before the cruise to enjoy this beautiful city. Tickets have been ordered (& have arrived!) for a West End theatre production of Jersey Boys. Yeah, I know... Jersey Boys in London? What's she thinking? One of the most recent acclaimed West End shows is War Horse, but I really want to see something fun & upbeat before departing on this cruise; and since I haven't already seen Jersey Boys and could get great seats... we will be there in wonderful seats watching the show & eating ice cream (as they do in the West End theatres)! The West End is considered the heart of London and if you're a theatre lover, you will think you've died & gone to heaven!

We are staying at the Renaissance Chancery Court as it is very nicely located within walking distance to many major sites and neighborhoods (including the West End and Covent Garden, the British Museum, Chinatown, and more... did I say shopping?).

If you've never been to London, take a tour on a double decker HOHO bus!. One reputable company that offers these tours is the Original London Sightseeing Tour It's a hop-on hop-off bus tour that also includes a Thames River cruise.

While in "The City", you may want to see the Cabinet War Rooms that housed Churchill's WWII bunker, watch the changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, visit the British Museum or Tate Modern. Need a break? Have a pint in a pub or visit a famous London tea house!

For shopolics, there's Oxford Street as well as the famous Harrod's department store. After I realized that I couldn't afford much at Harrod's or Harvey Nichols, I discovered Selfridge's a more mainstream department store. A couple of years ago, Ken & I walked to Selfridges and then split up, each going to pursue our own shopping passion. We were to meet at a designated time & place for lunch. When he spied me at the appointed time, I only had one very small bag. He was quite impressed that I had such a small bag and that it contained hair accessories (clips, bows, and such). BUT, when our AmEx bill came a month later, he was shocked beyond all measure! I had conveniently forgotten that US dollars and British pounds are quite different and so thinking that the amount was a dollar amount, it looked good to me. That is until the AmEx statement came and showed the true conversion! Needless to say, I am still proud to sport those expensive hair accessories!

If you have a craving for some excellent Chinese food while in London, be sure to head for Chinatown, just off Leicester Square (pronounced Lester). You won't be disappointed! Of course, I am always on the look-out for an interesting, historic, fun pub for a fish & chips dinner!

By the time we get to London, things will have settled down from the Royal Wedding!
