Pacific Coastal Wine Cruise 9/13/2013

Well, I can't stay "Cruiseless in Southport" for very long!  Travel is my passion and I love the planning & anticipation of a trip or cruise almost as much as I enjoy the trip itself!  Being a wine lover, I've always wanted to visit wineries on our Pacific coast.  Pacific coastal cruises are rare, as they are generally repositioning cruises to/from the Alaska season so we're off for a Pacific coastal cruise in September!

Of course, Elliott, our mascot will be accompanying us!  He's traveled far & wide with us, doing mostly cruises, since he was born in the jungles of Panama in 2006!

Just imagine the view as you sail beneath the Golden Gate Bridge!  Join us for a unique 9-night Pacific Coastal Cruise from Vancouver to San Diego, embarking September 13, 2013 on Celebrity’s recently “Solsticized”  Millennium.  Ports of call include Victoria, Nanaimo, Seattle, San Francisco (with an overnight), & Monterey.   This cruise offers a great opportunity to savor some of the great wines and craft beers of the Pacific Coast.   You can visit Chinatown for dim sum, the incredible Butchart Gardens and even Alcatraz.  How about hanging out with the Orca whales on a whale watching adventure, catching a flying fish at Pike's Place Market, or wandering Monterey’s famous Cannery Row?  The possibilities are almost endless.

Wine Cruise In-depth Planning Begins!

I booked this cruise a LONG time ago!  Now we're about 4 months away from our Celebrity wine cruise experience and I am excited!

I've been busy researching hotels and flights so now have those "under my belt" so to speak.  Fortunately I was able to use some Delta frequent flyer miles so we will be flying from Wilmington, NC.   As for hotels, Celebrity offers hotel packages, both pre and post cruise but I found some that are less $ and get great reviews so I have booked those for Ken & me.

Ken & I have booked a room at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver for two nights pre-cruise.   We are planning to stay one night post cruise in San Diego and I have booked the Andaz San Diego .

Ken's brother lives in Seattle and we haven't seen him in ages it seems; so we are flying to Seattle to spend a few nights before taking the Amtrak Cascades train to Vancouver!  I can already taste that yummy fresh king salmon!  Salmon bake anyone???

Now I'm ready to research our ports of call!

Vancouver - Our Embarkation City!

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

I've been to Vancouver once before and it was very rainy and extremely windy so my experience wasn't optimal!  I've been doing quite a bit of research on what to do, see, eat, and drink in all of our ports of call.  We will be arriving in Vancouver two days prior to embarkation for our cruise so I'm really looking forward to making the most of our time in this beautiful city! Several friends will be joining us at the Hyatt Regency and I plan to organize a dinner for the group...  more later on this!   Here are my thoughts on Vancouver!

A Hop-on Hop-off bus tour may be a good way to get an overview of the city.
HOHO (hop on, hop off) Bus Tour of Vancouver

Do a walking tour.  Be sure to bring your comfy walking shoes so that you can take a free walking tour with the tour guysThere are several tours from which to choose.  The tours are free but the guides work hard for tips!

Granville Island:  Being a foodie as well as a shopper, Granville Island will be top of my list to do in Vancouver!   Here is a bit from the Granville Island website that has roped me right in!
“Granville Island Public Market - Go on, you deserve a little temptation.  If Granville Island is the king of Vancouver destinations, then the Public Market is the jewel in the Island’s crown. A fascinating assortment of colorful stalls, showcasing unique homemade products and the very finest in gastronomic delights. All fresh from the ocean, the oven or the field. Try closing your eyes right now and imagine the rich aromas permeating from the lavish displays. Shimmering seafood, warm baked goods, plump fruit.  Okay, stop. That’s enough torture. Come and browse for yourself and see just why words don’t begin to describe it.”

Hey, you can even buy frozen fish to be shipped to your home!  Stop in at the Granville Island Brewery for a tour and tasting.

For  lunch, how about The Edible Canada Bistro?  It's located on Granville Island, across from the Public Market.

A fun & scenic way to get to Granville Island is via the Aquabus or the False Creek Ferry.

Gastown:   the oldest neighborhood in Vancouver; reports say that it was born out of a whiskey barrel and grew up around a saloon!  It's name is derived from a very colorful character named Gassy Jack who was a riverboat captain & a saloon keeper – while in Gas Town don’t miss your photo op with the statue of Gassy Jack and by the Steam Clock.  If you're a  history buff, you may want to take one of the Forbidden Vancouver walking tours of Gastown, which you can book in advance online.   You'll learn about the Lost Souls of Gastown or Prohibition City.  After this history lesson, it's probably time for some wine, right?  Stop at the Vancouver Urban Winery for a tasting.

Now it must be time for lunch or dinner!  For some great pub grub and beer, head to The Irish Heather.  If you plan to go for dinner, you may want to participate in the Long Table Series.  The Long Table Series (LTS) is an intimate gathering of friends, old and new, along our 40 foot communal table. Like coming home to "Sunday Dinner," but without the clean up:  hearty home-cooked meals, good people, and great value $18 (plus tax and service) incl. artisan beer / beverage. And if you don't finish up, someone else will do it for you.  The 40 foot table is a "communal" table—please sit wherever there is room. You may not know the folks beside you, but you will within 10 minutes.

Stanley Park, the crown jewel of Vancouver!  Everyone says that the beauty of Stanley Park is breathtaking.  Covering more than 1000 acres, you'll need to plan to spend at least a few hours here.  Within the park you can enjoy the Aquarium, the totem pole collection, beautiful flower gardens, even an urban rain forest!  There are walking & biking paths/trails, beaches to comb,  the nine o'clock gun, the Brockton Point Lighthouse, many beautiful vistas and a number of restaurants.

Here's a YouTube documentary video of Stanley Park.  I'm ready to visit!

Chinatown - Vancouver's Chinatown is North America's third largest after San Francisco and New York.  While in Chinatown, enjoy a visit to the Dr.Sun Yat-Sen Classical Gardens and also make sure you visit the world’s thinnest building that is only 6 feet deep and 2 stories tall.  The Sam Kee Building is noteworthy for being the shallowest commercial building in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. Click here for a YouTube video of the building.
I was  hoping to go for dim sum in Chinatown, but online reviews indicate that dim sum is better outside of Chinatown... can anyone correct me on this???

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

I visited Victoria a number of years ago and was lucky enough to stay at the Empress Hotel for a couple of days.  I am thrilled to be going back to this beautiful city!
Celebrity Millennium will dock at the Ogden Point cruise ship terminal, about a 25 minute walk to downtown Victoria.  We are the only ship in port from 8-5; but 3 ships arrive between 6 and 7 pm for the evening!  I’m happy that we will miss all of those crowds!
Click here for a Victoria map for cruise passengers.

I love this YouTube video of Victoria!  You will see everything from the harbour, Butchart Gardens, Empress Hotel, shopping street, Chinatown, and pubs!

I've listed a few of Victoria's highlights and, of course, some of my own personal "must do's"!

My preliminary plan for Victoria:   We’ll hang a left out of the cruise terminal and stroll down to Fisherman’s Wharf for the famous fish & chips at Barb’s (well if we’re hungry at that time of the morning & if they are open).  We can see and feed the seals and perhaps hop a mini ferry over to the inner harbor where we can see the Parliament buildings and the Empress Hotel.  Oooh… it is mandatory that we stop at the Bengal Lounge at the Empress for a glass of wine or cocktail.  The Bengal Lounge was designed in honor of Rudyard Kipling and the era of the British Raj in India & has a very classic British Empire ambiance.

Next up may be a self guided walking tour: Click here for tour information. The beauty of one of these self guided tours is that each is easily walkable within about 45 minutes. The routes have very little incline.  Best of all you are your own guide so you can stop and enjoy Victoria’s coffee shops and pubs as often or as little as you want!

Here are links to a few more self guided walking/biking tours:

How about a pub crawl?  Pub food is, in general, very good in Victoria as one pub tries to outdo another and the beer can't be beat!  A few pub recommendations that I found online include:
Canoe Brewpub - nice view of harbour, located in a restored boathouse. "Handcrafted beer. Real food"!
The Sticky Wicket - a cricket themed pub, located in the Strathcona Hotel, decent fish & chips, pool tables, and tv's for sports.
Irish Times - excellent selection of local & Irish beer, yummy fish & chips, shepherd's pie, etc.
Bard & Banker - an interesting "history lesson" from the website lets us know how the pub name originated"Opened in 1862 as the Bank of British Columbia, the building remained a bank until 1988 under a different array of banking establishments’ control. Of all the bank employees to work at this location in the 126 years it was a bank the most notable was, the bard of the Yukon, Robert Service."
Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub - a short cab ride from downtown or a mini ferry hop awayGreat variety of local and English beer.  Food is not  "regular pub grub" but is made from fresh, local ingredients.
Garrick's Head - weather permitting, have a drink on the patio.  Choose from about 44 varieties of beer on tap, including 22 from greater Victoria breweries.  Research indicates that this pub was built here because the owner thought it would be a good way to sell beer while people watched the public hangings across the square! You can see this square in a scene from the movie "Bird on a Wire", starring Goldie Hawn & Mel Gibson.
Swan's - Great beer, food, and location!  You can even get a beer sampler!  What's not to like?

Some of Victoria's Highlights:
Victoria Harbour Ferries:  Let's go ferry hopping around Victoria Harbour!  You can even do a pub crawl by ferry!  Its a fun way to zip around Victoria.

Royal BC Museum - This is #1 on Tripadvisor's list of attractions for Victoria.  The exhibits include a mining exhibit, First Nations exhibit, Natural History, IMAX theatre, and much more.

Butchart Gardens  One of Victoria’s top attractions with 55 acres of year round gardens.  Each year over one million plants are placed for uninterrupted bloom from March through October.   It's pronounced "Butch-art" and is visited by nearly 1 million people a year. The Gardens, described as incredibly beautiful,  are in a rural area, about a 45 minute drive from the cruise terminal ; it could take 1 ½ hours travel time (round trip) to visit Butchart Gardens from Victoria.  Once there, you will want to spend 3 hours to full enjoy the gardens.  So... plan your day in Victoria accordingly! Click here for the Butchart Gardens website.

Visit the oldest Chinatown in Canada & find Fan Tan Alley, the narrowest commercial street in North America with eleven active businesses, It was originally a gambling district with restaurants, shops, and opium dens but today it's a tourist destination with many small shops. At it's narrowest point it is only 0.9 meters wide.

Prince of Whales: Go on a whale watching tour & hang out with the Orcas!
Interested in wine or cider?  Then  head out of town to the north in the beautiful Saanich Valley where you can visit the Marley Farm Winery, the Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse or de Vine Vineyards

Afternoon tea at The Empress Hotel:  Tea Service starts at 12:00 p.m. daily with the last seating at 3:45 p.m.  It is recommended that you allocate an hour to enjoy your tea experience.  The current tea menu includes smoked salmon pinwheel, mango & curried chicken sandwich, cucumber sandwich with saffron loaf, free range egg salad croissant, cognac pork pate on sundried tomato bread, freshly baked raisin scone with strawberry jam & Empress cream, and much more!  Current pricing is CAD $48.95 per person.

Reservations are strongly recommended however walk-ins may be available. Tables are held for ten minutes after reservation time. You can make reservations online at Open Table.

Bits of trivia that I discovered about the Empress Hotel:
Ø  The portraits in the tea lobby are King George V and his wife Queen Mary, who originally intended to wed his brother, Prince Edward, who died of pneumonia. The portraits have been in place since the hotel opened in 1908

Ø   The difference between high tea and afternoon tea? High tea is generally taken at 4:00 p.m., and was more of a "working man's" dinner and they included hot savory items. High tea is mistakenly thought to include champagne or sparkling wine, but this should be referred to as Royal Tea

Ø  Notable guests have included Queen Elizabeth II, Rudyard Kipling, Shirley Temple, Spencer Tracy, Princess Margaret, Rita Hayworth, the King and Queen of Siam, Bob Hope, John Travolta, Barbra Streisand, Joan Lunden, Sarah McLachlan, Mel Gibson and Nelly Furtado

Ø  The Empress Tea Blend comes from six estates, including Kenya, Tanzania, South India, Assam, Sri Lanka, and China

Oh what's a girl to do when there is not enough time to do everything???   I think that means that she will just have to visit Victoria again!
